Lotus Notes 8, link hotspot cannot launch web browser

I could not find information about this problem, maybe it’s just so rare, I only got 2 computers with this problem out of 70s.
and then I tried to do something and it works !
The problem is some Lotus Notes cannot launch web browser by clicking a hotspot in a message, specifically cannot launch http but other protocol like ftp is working.

Hope this will help somebody outthere with this kind of problem…

refresh (or replace design) of Local Address Book application, as we know that some configurations are put here

Actually, this did not solve my problem, but just to make it sure…

set the search bar to either Yahoo and Google (those two are built in there…)

and then I tried to launch Web Browser…

to my surprise, this Lotus Notes 8 client innocently launching Internet Explorer !

and last thing to do, check it from email message to launch a link, it just works…

Lotus Symphony for Windows Beta 2 from IBM

After a little over a month, IBM released beta 2 of Lotus Symphony.

I already used it for daily use, but for spreadsheet I still use Excell after bad experience with OOo, which a simple COUNTIF() gave me wrong result because after little more test, seems OOo doesn’t support ‘wildcard’, but well, back to Lotus Symphony, LS Document is ok, though it’s nice if we can configure shortcuts; LS Presentation, maybe just me, full screen is not full screen, Windows’ taskbar still visible.

I just downloaded Lotus Symphony Windows Beta 2, and will check the spreadsheet.

If you install Lotus Symphony after OpenOffice, almost all extensions will be redirect to LS, without notice

I tried Lotus Symphony for some times, it is built on Eclipse just like CodeGear’s 3rdRail and JBuilder also I think.
The first thing I notice was the icon, it’s the same with Lotus Notes 6.x, maybe with newer Lotus Notes; I read somewhere that Lotus Notes is built on Eclipse also, since Notes 7 I think.

It seems the interface much differ with other office suite, but I guess I will like it just let see after use it for more times.
Btw, after installation it will take over all OpenOffice’s .ODT. I don’t remember whether it asked me to replace it or not.

Forgot to mention, in Windows, time needed to launch Lotus Symphony just about OpenOffice, if not faster a little. I will use it parallel with OpenOffice and maybe with MS Office 2007.

Office Suite application

It’s been a while I use OpenOffice most of the time and some MS Excel at office, in my opinion MS Excel is the best spreadsheet and used extensively in my office.
Until recently I am just aware that Lotus Symphony is back. Yes ! That Symphony, was big brother of Lotus 123.
Looong time ago, this Symphony was great. The first Office suite in DOS text era (as far as I remember), and then came Aston-Tate’s Framework.

I just downloaded Lotus Symphony beta, not yet try it, and I am not sure whether it’s free or no; yet at the website I don’t see link about pricing.

So far we have some Office Suites,

Microsoft Office, the well known, seems the de-facto standard. For Windows and OSX, but run uner Linux via Wine or Crossover
Kingsoft Office, a China product with almost 100% compatibility to MS Office even the spreadsheet is like Excel, yet much cheaper and claimed to be faster in some areas. Windows only
KOffice, from The Kompany, run on *nix flavour and for Windows is still under development. I don’t use much, as it’s quite different with other suite
StarOffice, by Sun, the paying version of OpenOffice, but cheap, with some enhancements. Also has a User Portal site with some resources for OpenOffice, for most platforms including Windows and *nix
Lotus Symphony, by IBM, not tried yet, but it should be good, and available for Windows and Linux

PC-BSD is an Open Source Operating System based on FreeBSD, which aim at easy to use while still secure and mature inherited from FreeBSD.

Just a quick posted:
I installed PC-BSD on a desktop PC Pentium 4/2.66GHz/512MB RAM and on Centrino/1.7GHz/512MB RAM laptop.
The installer detected the installed hardwares in desktop and laptop very well, installation process was in hi-res mode, automatically set to the best available resolution on my 17″ LCD and 12″ WXGA on laptop, and took about 20 minutes for complete installation of cd #1. Almost “just click [NEXT]“, typing only on entering administrator and default user form.
Cool.

After logging on, I set to “not automatically logged on” when asked during installation, thus I have to enter the correct user/password, KDE appear.
Seems very fast, and desktop also very responsive.
There’s no “big applications” like OpenOffice or The GIMP, those are on Extra CD, which I did not install yet.
Played around, PC-BSD impressed me. I have to install Extra CD, and trying whether it still fast.

Currently I use Ubuntu Linux, it’s good.
But then I just couldn’t resist that red-cute-little-devil, thus after reading some articles, compare their sites’ content, I choose PC-BSD. And I am downloading the 1.3.0 ISO file, will take about 2-3 hours with this speed

And another Linux I will try is Panic! Linux, based on Slackware. It will be ready around end of this February, as Budi, main developer, told me it’s fast, and support wide range of hardwares. Hope it supports touch-screen monitor then.

Update Firefox Portable and MAF/MHT support

I use Firefox 2.0 now, but still I have to drop some addons because their authors not yet updated to support the 2.0
And the one that available at PortableApps is Firefox 2.0 while the latest is 2.0.0.1

After upgrading my Firefox Portable to 2.0, I lost my MAF/MHT support.
And then I found the shortcut key of Minimize to Tray which is Ctrl+Shift+M is taken by Tab Mix Plus’ Merge All Windows

I have to consult Google for more, and first I need to upgrade Firefox to the latest one.

Upgrading to Firefox v2.0.0.1

Maybe there is other better way to do this, but I use the simple approach.
1) download the latest Firefox and install as Standard option
2) copy all files include folders “Program FilesMozilla Firefox” to “FirefoxPortableAppfirefox”
that is it, you have the latest Firefox and it is safe to uninstall Firefox if you do not need that one.

Searching on Google gave me a link to an unofficial release of MAF/Mozilla Archive Format version 0.6.3b here. It is for Linux, but works well on Windows, said the changes only on version check. But it does the job.

And last one, about shortcut key.
I found a full-blown addons that “Rebind your keys”. It is able to re-map the shortcut key or even add new shortcut.
That’s great, solved problem with conflicting shortcut keys.
You can find Keyconfig here, and need to install “functions for keyconfig” addons also which you can find it here.

Portable Apps: Firefox 2.0

Yesterday I spent some times for configuring Firefox v2.x Portable Apps.

Late to move to 2.x ? It’s not late, the reasons I stayed on 1.5.x because I use some plugins (actually about 30 plugins…) and most of the plugins at that time not yet support the 2.x
And even now I still can not found the latest MAF/MHT support or a similar plugins for 2.x, which make my Firefox 2.x not able to save webpages into MAF, ZIP, and MHT format.

Back to Firefox v2.0, so I download Firefox Portable from PortableApps, extract to my bin folder, do update to Firefox 2.01, and begin to update the 30 something plugins…

There are some plugins that I have to install before I use Firefox: MyPortal, Tab Mix Plus, FireFTP, GMail Manager, FlashGot, Aardvark, Foxy Tunes, IE Tab, Flat Bookmark Editing, and MinimizeToTry.
And for making an enjoyable inet browsing, I need another 15 plugins but it’s okay with that mentioned plugins.

Oh yes, Tools|Extensions was changed into Tools|Add-ons which make conflict shortcut key with Aardvark, and MinimizeToTry Ctrl-Shift-M is used by Firefox’ Merge Window.
And slower compare to 1.5x ? I don’t know yet the other things…

TIOBE Index of Programming Languages Popularity

End of year TIOBE Index just released.
The Top-3 still the same as before: Java, C, C++
While Delphi at 9, Python at 7, Ruby at 11 from 20, possibly helped by RoR I believe.
Guess the 4th: BASIC ! So, many peoples back to BASIC (Me too ! I use FreeBASIC now…)
Although Java, C, C++ still at Top 3, their popularity are decreasing.

Spam comments.

Seems most of this site’s visitors are, well, bots. As they are dilligently commented most of my posts
I employed WP Haschash that block all comments that look-like posted by bots, so I have some in my “need approval comments” which I blindly remove from my site

Once I have read somewhere in the net (I thought already bookmarked that) that said, but I don’t whether the write mean it or just sarkasm,

“… one indicator whether your site is a hit or no is if it attracts bots to spam it. Because those bots only spam sites that have good hits…”

It’s not good. Or is it ?
